This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like typical body horror, but inside Together exists a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters face the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor never feels overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal work together symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
