In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Government Discussions Taking Place
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several leading political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
