Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Whenever a major honors show draws close, one notices a clamor for the addition fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles in the world and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
