The feeling at Lazio's home ground was far from happy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had conceded 10 goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.
A Season Unraveling?
Was the team's progress falling apart, or did there exist any cohesion keeping it intact to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, before he to later acknowledge that the board had not mentioned the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Reports that he might quit were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.
The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic on the pitch as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other first five games, which included the capital clash. At any given moment, it has been hard to ascertain if they are improving or collapsing.
Cancellieri's Unexpected Comeback
One individual kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio this season. He completed last season at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were attempting to remain there a while longer. The registration embargo forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad with no new signings.
He signed originally during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."
Finding His Best Role
Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to determine the exact type of the player's talent. Billed as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
