European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with historical international strategies.
